How to Apply for Admission by Examination for the Uniform Bar Exam
Rules Regulating Admission to the Bar in the District of Columbia
You are responsible to read and understand the rules governing admission and unauthorized practice of law: D.C. App. R. 46 (https://admissions.dcappeals.gov/rule-46) and D.C. App. R. 49 (https://admissions.dcappeals.gov/admin/getpdfformfromadmin.action?queryType=1&id=389) Please note that the admissions rules were amended this year.
Because of the Covid 19 pandemic, there are additional requirements for persons wishing to sit for the July 2022 Bar Exam: https://admissions.dcappeals.gov/jul-exam-statmt
If you did not obtain a JD or LLB from an ABA approved law school, please also read Guidance Regarding 26 ABA Credit hour Requirement for Graduates of non-ABA Approved Law Schools. (https://admissions.dcappeals.gov/admin/getpdfformfromadmin.action?queryType=1&id=388)
DC requires that LLB or non-ABA approved JD transcripts demonstrate that applicants' completed a degree that is substantially equivalent to a Juris Doctor degree that would be awarded by a law school approved by the ABA. Please note: this requirement may differ from the non-ABA approved LLB and JD degree requirements.
The 2021-2022 Standards and Rule of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools "require, as a condition for graduation [with a Juris Doctor degree], successful completion of a course of study of not fewer than 83 credit hours."
Pursuant to Rule 46(c)(4), the Committee on Admissions will audit credits from an ABA approved law school transcript to determine if "all such 26 credit hours [have been] earned in courses of study, each of which is substantially concentrated on a single subject tested on the Uniform Bar Examination."
Applicants must satisfy both requirements to be eligible to take the DC Bar exam.
